On 15 June 2007, WWE.com announced that "Sensational" Sherri Martel had died at the age of 49. She had died that morning at the residence his mother in Birmingham, Alabama. Martell adds to the growing list of wrestling personalities to die at an early age.
Born Sherri Russell on February 8 1958 Sherri Martell, as would be known, debuted in 1980 after training at The Fabulous Moolah. Martell got her first break when he joined the AWA in 1985 Superclash be affirmed its version of the Women's title when she beat Candi Devine. She went on to have a period of three reigns as champion of the Women's AWA.
In July 1987, Martel made her debut in WWE and defeated The Fabulous Moolah. As Sherri Martell still had the AWA title (which lost three days later) that is the only wrestler of any sex to keep the world title in 2 major promotions at the same time. Sensational Sherri came to reign for 15 months before losing title by Rockin 'Robin. During the reign also played the role of valet the Honky Tonk Man, Peggy Sue.
Sensational Sherri aligned itself with Randy Savage and feuded with Hulk Hogan and Elizabeth, Sherri had its most memorable segments of his career, including getting a haircut from Elizabeth at Summerslam 89. At WrestleMania 7 Savage lost a career-hour match against Ultimate Warrior and Martell attacked Savage but was attacked by Elizabeth.
After a brief alliance with Ted DiBiase Martell joined forces with Shawn Michaels. During a segment with Michaels and former tag partner Marty Jannetty, Martell crashed in the face with a mirror of Jannetty when Michaels pulled her in front of him. Upon his return several months later teamed with Jannetty Jannetty against Michaels, but when left meant Martell was left without a partner. Michaels rivals accompanied different from ring road to Wrestlemania 9 in when she accompanied Tatanka for his fight Michaels met with Luna Vachon and the two women had a feud. During his feud with Vachon made several appearances in the USWA. Shortly after Martell left the WWE.
After a brief stint in NWA SMW and Martell appeared in ECW Shane Douglas and guided in the ECW title. She participated in the classic triple threat between Douglas, Terry Funk and Sabu before leaving for WCW.
Martell changed his ring name to Sensuous Sherri and joined Ric Flair in his feuds with Sting and Hulk Hogan. When Flair lost a retirement match to Hogan that he would be associated with Steve Austin, but just before he was injured and was released. After a short absence was partner with Harlem Heat and became known as Sister Sherri.
Martell appeared in ECW for a fight where he was the valet of Shane Douglas and Brian Pillman in a match against Ron Simmons and Too Cold Scorpio Martell piledriver by Douglas after crossing equipment. In WCW was about to mange the team of William Regal and Jean Paul Levesque (Triple H) when Levesque took an offer from WWE management Martell left the Harlem Heat.
In Clash of the Champions XXXI, Harlem Heat and Martel defeated Bunkhouse Buck, Dick Slater, and Colonel Robert Parker (11:01) when Martel pinned Parker. Martel hit her head on the mat, and suddenly fell in love with Parker. In the battle of the XXXII Martel Champions and Paker's getting married, but Madusa interrupted the wedding. She and Martel involved in a fight, then fought matches that of the first women in the WCW Monday Nitro January 29, 1996. Shortly after defeating Colonel Robert Parker in WCW World War III Martell left WCW.
After a short circuit on the independence returned to WCW, but it was a short period of time without success. She appeared in WWE in 2005 at an angle to help promote the bout between Shawn Michaels and Kurt Angle that ended with the application angle of the lock on his ankle. In 2006, he was admitted to the Hall of Fame and the WWE made several appearances in TNA.
Many of the diva of today would do well to look at Sherri career and learn from it is certainly one of the personalities of wrestling's biggest all time. Sherri Martell leaves behind a son. She will be sadly missed.
